What Tiki Island does to a window
Tiki Island sits just off the Gulf Freeway at the mainland end of the causeway, a village of canal homes built out into Jones Bay and West Bay. Almost every house has water on one side and Tiki Drive or a side street on the other, with a boat lift under the deck and a wall of glass facing the canal. The bay does not throw salt the way the Gulf does, but it is steady, and the humidity off the water keeps a damp film on the glass most of the year. After a few weeks the canal-side windows take on a gray haze that is easy to miss until the evening light comes in low across the water.
The homes here are elevated, many rebuilt or raised after Ike, and the shaded space underneath keeps the stair-side glass and the ground-level windows damp enough for mildew in the shoulder seasons. The front side of the house has its own problem: the freeway and the causeway traffic put a fine gray dust on the street-facing glass, and the southeast breeze carries it onto the screens. Irrigation on hard well water leaves mineral spots on the lower panes. Next door in Bayou Vista the same canal-home layout brings the same set of problems, with the added salt spray from Highland Bayou on a windy day.
